Cash, Cards and VAT

 

The currency is the Australian Dollar and comes in denominations of $5, $10, $20, $50 and $100 notes and 5c, 10c, 20c, 50c, $1 & $2 coins.

All cash transactions are rounded to the nearest 5c, dependent on the retailer it may be rounded up or down.

Australian notes are made from plastic making them waterproof, which is perfect for the Australian lifestyle… and also for those who don’t check their pockets before washing!

The Goods & Sales Tax (GST, equivalent to UK VAT) is 10% – Prices are displayed including GST.

When using your Australian bank card at any retail outlet, you will be given the option of cheque, savings or credit. When you first receive your new cards here in Australia make sure you check with the bank what option you select. If you are using your UK bank Card in an eftpos machine (equivalent to chip and pin) you will need to press credit each time even if it is only a debit card and enter your pin. We advise you check with your bank in the UK that you will be able to use your card overseas.
