Western Australia’s coast line is famous for its beautiful white sand beaches, whether it’s the friendly resort of Hillarys, the trendy suburb of Cottesloe or the surfing mecca that is Scarborough there is a beach for everyone. Below are just a few of the faves.

Scarborough is the largest and most developed beach popular with local surfers who come to make the most of the prime breaker on this part of the coast. Regular surf and lifesaving displays and competitions are held here. There is a play area for the children set back from the sand and a strip of cafes and restaurants.

Cottesloe is very popular with visitors and locals who love to come and soak up the cosmopolitan vibe. Dominating the beachfront is the Indiana Tea house, an elegant colonial style restaurant situated right on the beachfront. Swimming conditions are generally good here and surfers are banned through the height of summer (Oct-Mar). A Popular beach with families due to amenities such as, picnic benches, BBQ’s, children’s playgrounds, plenty of room to run around and shaded areas on the beach. There are also many bars and cafes that are situated along the beach side. Cottesloe was also the location for last year’s Australia Day antics with the Havaiana thong challenge which saw Perth make a new world record and beat the famous Bondi Beach!

Mullaloo is a fantastic beach and green popular with families and friends taking advantage of the many picnic and BBQ facilities overlooking the beach. There are also 2 children’s play grounds, the Mullaloo Beach Hotel where you can enjoy a drink and a bite to eat, a cafe on the beach and the the beach is patrolled. It’s very popular on Christmas Day when people arrive from 7am to throw some bacon and eggs on the BBQ and take in the incredible view of the Indian Ocean.

Hillarys beach is a family favourite in Perth. A mini man made harbour which encompasses a naturally calm body of water with little or no current. It’s the best beach area in Perth if you have toddlers or not so confident swimmers but just as easily is great for the water babies too. Added to that the shaded areas and small park on the beach, this is kid heaven!! Great for the adults too, so much to see and do when everyone wants a break from the sun with a wealth of unique boutiques and shopping options and restaurants. The San Churro Chocolateria is an absolute must for the chocolate lover although you may not want to leave!!

Yanchep Lagoon
Yanchep Lagoon beach is a family favourite. Located 40 minutes North of Perth City the lagoon is surrounded by reef which makes the area inside quite swimmer friendly. Patrolled by lifeguards it’s an ideal spot for younger family members. At the top of the beach is a little café for when you want a break from the sun and a small children’s play area.

Mettams Pools
Mettam’s Pool nestles in a protected marine park, and surrounded by reefs creating a naturally calm ocean pool. It’s a great area for a mini snorkelling adventure, a relaxing swim in the calm waters or watching the surfers just beyond the reef. Mettam’s has wheelchair and buggy access, showers and a small picnic area just up from the beach or head up to one of the many trendy bars and restaurant’s just opposite to get out of the sun for a while.
