Pick your own fruit in Perth
We've done the research for you!
With the school holidays in full swing I was slowly running out of ideas to entertain the kids, well ideas that didn’t cost a small fortune! So with it being a beautiful sunny spring day in Perth, I decided to take in some of the fresh country air and take the tribe fruit picking.
First stop, pick your own Strawberries!
Located just 45 minutes from Perth city in Bullsbrook is Ti strawberry farm with acres of fresh yummy strawberries ready to be picked. It costs $10 per tray (approx. 5kg) which includes 1 picker, each additional picker in the group is $2 per person.
The kids had a blast finding the juiciest, biggest and most mis-shaped strawberries they could find, they also tasted a few along the way!
Surprisingly it wasn’t as busy as expected especially as it was the school holidays, however we did go midweek so do prepare for it to be busy if you head there over the weekend.
Please be aware that their fields can get picked out quickly, so when one is empty they open another. Make sure you check their Facebook page for availability before you head there.
Oh and make sure you wear old enclosed shoes as you can get very dirty!
Strawberry season is in Spring – Ti Strawberry Farm is open selected weekdays and weekends 9am – 5pm
Check their Facebook page for updates on picking.
Next stop Citrus Picking!
So with our strawberry tray fully loaded, we headed on to the Hills of Chittering Valley to Golden Grove Orchard to get citrus picking! Golden Grove Orchid is located approx.1hour from Perth City.
I absolutely love this place, with the gorgeous smell of oranges and picturesque location it’s a beautiful place to spend an afternoon.
We couldn’t wait to get stuck in to this beautiful orchard, with rows upon rows of trees filled with juicy oranges, mandarin, grapefruit, lemons and limes. Before we got started we sampled some of the oranges and mandarins to see which ones we wanted to pick, then off we went armed with a map, bucket and clippers ready to start picking.
Fruit picked is charged by the kilo. The cost is $10 per adult and this includes 2.5kgs of fruit (around ¼ of the bucket) children are free. It’s easy to get carried away, especially if you have super eager pickers with you, so just be mindful that the fruit picked in your bucket must be paid for.
Once back at base we weighed and paid for our fruit then quenched our thirst with the most delicious freshly squeezed orange juice!
We will definitely be heading back, but next time we’ll go over the weekend so we can sample some of their devonshire teas in the old restored packing shed, this is only available on weekends from April to November.
If you wanted to take a packed lunch there’s plenty of picnic tables around.
Winter and Spring are peak seasons for picking oranges (June to October)
Golden grove Orchid is open 7 days a week 9.30am – 4pm, just closing for Christmas day, New Years day, Good Friday and Easter Sunday.
